Ski resorts around Milan

If you are planning a visit to Milan this winter and you wish to mix it with a week end on the slopes here there is a list of places where to enjoy the powder snow around Milan.

2 hours drive from Milan

In a radius of about 150 kilometers there are several ski resorts that will satisfy the tastes of all types of skiers. In particular the Northern territories of the Lombardy region offers plenty of opportunities for both beginners and experienced skiers. Our favorite ski resorts are:

Foppolo (BG)

In the province of Bergamo the Foppolo ski area, of about 30 square kilometers, features 19 different slopes and 10 chair lifts. This is one of the most popular destination in close proximity of Milan.

Caspoggio (So)

In the province of Sondrio, close to the Swiss border, the ski resort in this area can count on 9 chair lifts and ski lifts and 19 different slopes. The Caspoggio resort is also one of the most appreciated destination by snowboarders. This area features a fully equipped snow park with one half-pipe, three jumps and five different rails.

More than two hours drive from Milan

The city of Milan is conveniently located in the North of Italy and this makes it extremely easy and quick to reach the northern territories of the country. From Valle D’Aosta (North-West of Italy) to Trentino Alto Adige (North-East of Italy) the opportunities for ski enthusiasts are endless and ski resorts are fully equipped with the most modern infrastructures.

Valle D’Aosta

This is the smallest region of Italy and it is completely surrounded by the mountains. In particular it features the tallest mountain of Europe: the Monte Bianco or the Mont Blanc (in Italian it sounds much better than it does in French…). The second tallest mountain is the Monte Rosa that stands proudly between Italy and Switzerland.  The geography of the Valle D’Aosta makes it very easy to find ski resorts where to also enjoy delicious delicatessen and good wine. Among the different opportunities take into consideration the ski resorts of Gressoney (a 2 hours and 50 minutes drive from Milan), La Thuile ( a 2 hours and 40 minutes drive from Milan) and Courmayeur ( a 2 hours and 30 minutes drive from Milan).

Trentino Alto Adige

If you are truly looking for the place to go when it comes to skiing in Italy, Trentino Alto Adige is the place to be. The ski resorts in this region are probably the best on the Italian territory. It is bordered by Austria (North) and Switzerland (West) and it is considered to be exclusively a mountain region, given that the lowest territory (below the 600 meters on the sea level) are only the ones around the Garda lake. Two of the most popular ski resorts in this region are for sure the Val di Fassa (cities like Canazei, Vigo and Moena) and our favorite: the Val di Fiemme. This valley in the eastern area of Trentino Alto Adige and in the heart of the Paneveggio natural park features some of the most spectacular views of the Dolomites. The mountain range known as Pale di San Martino overhangs the entire valley where ski resorts like Alpe di Lusia and the SKI Centre Latemar are. Passo Rolle is one of the highest ski stations of this region and marks the border between the Val di Fiemme and the Valle del Primiero.

Skiing in Switzerland

The city of Milan is just 50 kilometres from the Swiss border and go skiing in this country might be a good experience after all the visits to Milan’s museums. Getting to popular destinations like Sankt Moritz or Pontresina (in the Engadina region) won’t take more than two hours. While the very fancy Gstaad and Crans Montana are a bit farther, more or less a four hours and half drive from Milan, but these two places truly deserve a visit.
